One Figure

A Step is a movement of the foot from here to there. A Figure is a specific sequence of steps forming a set that is complete, is often standardized, and is widely accepted and used as one component of a dance routine.

Paso Doble The Twists

by Harold & Meredith Sears

The Twists is an unphased (but surely phase VI) paso doble figure that we first encountered in Cantrell's Silverio in 2006 and are currently enjoying most often in Schmidt's Spanish Banderillero from 2010.

The figure begins with one measure of even-count preparation and then continues with three syncopated "twists" in measures two and three (1234; 1&234&; 123&4;). We begin in closed position facing wall with trail feet free. Appel R (lady appel L) and turn to semi-closed position, fwd L, maneuver R, and step back and side L to closed position facing reverse and wall; Although the actual count is given above, it will probably help to count at this point: 1&23 1&23 1&2. These are the "twists."

Cross your R in back of L/unwind RF and step L (lady fwd L/fwd R outside partner turning RF) to banjo position facing line and center, fwd R pivoting RF (lady bk L), sd L (lady close R in a heel turn) to closed position reverse and wall again. At this point, you have only used three of the four beats of the second measure, but it feels as though you have done a whole "thing." You have done one twist turn. For the second "twist," simply repeat the first. The third "twist" is truncated: cross your R in back of L/unwind RF and step L (lady fwd L/fwd R outside partner turning RF) to banjo position facing line and center, and close R to L blending to closed position line and center, lead foot free.
